The guy I've been talking to from the North Staffordshire branch of BCS
(British Computer Society) has just mentioned to me this website...

It seems there will be a Human-Computer interaction conference held for
a week at Keele in July of next year.
Not sure if anyone was really aware of this so thought I'd mention it.
Also CC'ing trips@ as a bunch of us are likely to go with our LUG-member
hats on, make a blog post about it - that kind of thing.
I'm not sure which bits (if any, I presume there must be some - or he
wouldn't have mentioned it to me, I'm no academic!) are open to the
general-public, I'll keep looking.
I'll send another reminder when it's closer to (and if I don't you can
remind me to!)

Drs Ed Dr Quincey, Sandra Woolley and Goksel Misirli are the Keele CS
academics organising the BCS HCI 2020 conference. You should drop them an
email, I suspect they would be really interested in getting the LUG
involved in some capacity. They will also be able to answer any questions
you have about general public access.

Since I've got you though :P
1) I've been watching the 'Hack Keele' mailing list (seems any member of
the public can join Keele Union for free just on their site, then
subscribe to the society)... if you ever pop to any of their events let
me know and I'll tag along :) (and at least I'd know someone!)
2) Don't suppose you know a Robert McKay and Terry Dray? Function
Office will be working with them shortly on helping micro-charities that
they're tasking some students to help.
3) I've heard a rumour that Keele IT have someone running the show these
days - who has completely OUTLAWED (it's the way it was put to me!) any
of use Linux anywhere on campus (or I guess at least excluding the
students own systems). Any truth to this do you know?
A bunch of us (before we knew about point 3 above) did pop up (as their
in our building) to Keele IT to give them leaflets about the LUG before
the relaunch... as of yet, none have chosen to show (but they *seemed*
interested) - maybe it's as a result of point 3 possibly? Do you know
anyone in Keele IT? The only people we're aware of are now former
employees (maybe related :S).

Hi Steve,
1) I'm afraid I don't ever make it 'Hack Keele' events - my evenings
are
pretty much wiped out due to being a dad of 11 month old twins (which is
also why I haven't made it to a LUG meeting yet). Plus staff don't tend to
get involved too heavily in student societies. However, I reckon they
would love to hear from you - they are trying to put on some "seminars" for
the society, so having a talk from the LUG might go down well. I know the
society committee pretty well, so I can ask them what they think about you
giving a talk if you like?
2) Don't know either I'm afraid.
3) We have a new CIO who seems very Microsoft focussed. I think IT
services are now moving entirely over to Microsoft, so a lot of the old
Linux people have now left IT services - I don't really know anyone in IT
services anymore either as a result. However, CS have managed to avoid the
Linux cull - we still dual boot all of our machines, often teach using
Linux, and the vast majority of staff and postgrads members are using Linux
on their laptops and office machines.

Yeah we could do a talk briefly explaining what a LUG is, maybe our
history and what we're about and up to. Maybe even an outline of what
it is we like to advocate about... especially if Keele students are
being Microsoft brain washed - they might have more than few clueless
about the FLOSS community... I noticed more than a few of the Hack Keele
coding events themselves are Microsoft sponsored.
After Christmas would be ideal, feel free to share this conversation so
far with the person you know in Hack Keele - might be easier. If they
want to contact the LUG directly off-list they can use
info(a)staffslug.org.uk
