I'm thinking of possibly doing a talk on creating a basic web server for
the 3rd December workshop...
Basically how to set up Apache, with a basic PHP and MySQL stack - and
throw in use of certbot (for Let's Encrypt certificates)... does this
float anyone's boat?
The 3rd December *was* going to be (but was never confirmed) the talk on
CAcert, but the guy who was going to do the talk was preferring it be
further away from Christmas. So this is now definitively going to be on
the 11th February instead.
We're also going to be inviting other local LUG's I've been talking to,
to participate and come over for the CAcert one, and possibly other
cross-talks too.
As for the 17th December workshop... the thought has been to have a
little "end of quarter" round off meeting, maybe play with that Tux
robot a bit (a bit of fun basically) and also some lightning talks (5 to
10 minute) if people are interested in doing that? (an idea that the
bunch of us which went Oggcamp this year got).

Just a suggestion, Steven... more and more users these
days are using a
commercial hosting service for simplicity - perhaps you could "weave in"
relevant issues/considerations to your talk? I'm thinking about the
importance of static IP address(es) and security issues (taint checking
of variables, etc., etc.) relevant to both scenarios.

Duly noted... given that multiple ID documentation is
required for the
notary process - I appreciate that not everyone will be interested in
actually obtaining one or more certificates - it might be an idea to
flag up the required ID documentation quite a while prior to 11 February
so that there's enough time to get these to bring along on the evening.
Alex Robertson can confirm the detail, but IIRC 1 x government-issued
photo document /(e.g. photo driving licence, passport)/ and 1 x address
document bearing individual's name /(e.g. utility bill but NOT mobile
phone bill)/ is the minimum.

Oh sure it won't just be as simple as it sounds! I'll also briefly talk
about control panels, networking, hosting providers etc... But for the
lab task I thought I'd make a few simple Debian 10 VM's (no package sets
installed, very basic, just SSH) and just have people grab a few
packages, make a few basic config files and... tada there is a
webserver. Maybe even get it to the point of being sufficient for a
Wordpress site or something. Basically walk through all the steps for
people completely new to even server administration.

Yeah been speaking with Alex extensively, do you know him? The
requirements have been briefly mentioned on the StaffsLUG site but when
it gets closer to I'll repeat them. I went to the 2012 event myself
anyway so I'm familiar with the drill and can assure others too.

Yeah recently noticed the lugmasters@ mailing list of lug.org.uk - so
will be talking to all LUGs this way and let them know about
less-frequent events (e.g. like this is the first CAcert ATE in about 7
years!). Was also talking to John Alexander about some kind of West
Midlands mailing list for people running LUGs... that way anything doing
on within travelling distance might be better known.
