Screening of Revolution OS on 14th March 2023
by Steven Maddox
Hello!
We're trying to get in to the habit of announcing new LUG workshops with
at least 25 days notice... but since that is a fairly new policy and we
wanted to do something on the 14th March anyway we're going ahead
anyway! (2 weeks notice should be fine enough)
Since Richard suggested a social, I thought perhaps we'd not do anything
super critical... and instead do our first screening event! (something
we've mentioned in the past but never actually done).
A while back I obtained a copy of 'Revolution OS' that came out in 2001
and chronicles the first ten years from 1991-2001 of Linux history with
people like Eric S Raymond, Linus Torvalds, Bruce Perens, and Richard
Stallman... all appearing to tell their stories.
Since it's an actual legal DVD... it should be fine for private viewing
for anyone who attends in person (so sorry, we won't be streaming the
meeting this time!). Oddly I can't seem to find a copy on the Internet
Archive any more... but if you're certain you can't attend (don't spoil
it by watching it and THEN attending!) then a quick YouTube search will
probably pull up a copy if you can't make the meeting!
We'll put on the first 40 minutes, have the customary break, then put on
the other 40 minutes (it's 1 hour 25 minutes long including credits).
We'll skip the last 5 minutes as it's an awful song (lyrics by Richard
Stallman) which is HORRIBLY cringy... unless someone REALLY wants to
watch it.
There should be plenty of time for us to pause for any clarifications /
questions as we go... between all of us we can probably fill in any
blanks that you have about Linux history during this period.
If we really want to... since it's the 2 disc special edition, there are
some interviews apparently on the 2nd disc that I've never even watched.
We've also got plenty of Linux Journal and Linux Format magazines from
around 1999 (when the LUG started... including us being mentioned in one
of the magazines) and 2000 as well if you fancy flicking through some
articles whilst the video is playing.
I'll get some snacks in (popcorn anyone?) and soft drinks as well.
Please bring along along your friends, family, or significant other...
as it'd be a great way to introduce the topic of Linux to them.

Fwd: [org-stoke] Data Discrimination Bill Meeting on Tuesday 28th March
by Steven Maddox
Thought I'd also forward you all a copy of this.
ORG Stoke are having their second physical meetup in the same room that
we use for LUG meetings on the 28th March (so 2 weeks after the
'Revolution OS' screening I just e-mailed about).
It should a be a great opportunity to meet new people (that we might be
able to tell them about the LUG too)... as ORG will be advertising this
out to their supporters that they have in the local area.
Please join their mailing list if you haven't already done so (and let
them know you'll come)...
https://lists.openrightsgroup.org/listinfo/org-stoke
Or if you have a Meetup account then you can just RSVP to their meeting
or e-mail them (information for both is below)

Hello again,
This is to announce that we'll be having our second physical meet up on
the Tuesday 28th March.
We were going to do one back in December but the timing just didn't seem
quite right with Christmas and luckily the person we liaise with at ORG
will be promoting this meeting to anyone who is in the local area who is
on the ORG general mailing list (e.g. if you've ever signed a petition,
donated, asked for a newsletter, etc..).
It'd be great to see some of you that came to the meeting in June (after
the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted and we weren't stuck doing Jitsi
meetings!). Especially now that we're organising things with our own
mailing list, rather than organising things elsewhere (e.g. through LUG
channels). We can start to gather our communications about specific ORG
Stoke-on-Trent matters here instead.
We'll be having two more in-person meetings this year so don't worry if
you can't make this one.
This meeting will cover exactly what the 'Data Protection and Digital
Information Bill' is, what it started out as, and how it is currently
progressing.
Particularly we'll be covering how it attempts to amend the 'Data
Protection Act' since it was updated to conform with GDPR back in 2018.
ORG have sent us a tonne of leaflets about this issue so it'd be
brilliant if you can take some and distribute them out wherever you
think is appropriate locally.
It's the same venue as before... but for those that didn't come last
time, it's just an office in a building on Keele Science Park that fits
around 30 people. We've got access to tea & coffee, soft drinks, and a
vending machine.
The presentation we'll giving is for everyone, as it'll affect us all
whether you're just an average member of the public or involved in an
organisation that processes or controls data on behalf of others... this
will be bad news if it gets through unscathed for us all.
So please bring along along your friends, family, or significant
other... digital rights affect us all.

FSFE Potteries: I Love Free Software Day !! (14th February)
by Steven Maddox
Hello!
This is to let you know that FSFE Potteries will be holding a meeting on
Tuesday 14th February!
It'll be in the same room as where the LUG does it's usual "Workshop"
meetings... so just consider it another one of those, but with a
slightly different angle.
They're going to be celebrating their first 'I Love Free Software Day
<https://fsfe.org/news/2023/news-20230126-01.en.html>' (it's the 13th
time that Free Software Foundation Europe
<https://fsfe.org/index.en.html> has ran the campaign)
Unfortunately the new group has been restricted by COVID-19 (as they
formed in 2020) and so couldn't do this on the previous two February's.
But I'm well informed that it apparently calls for food and drinks... so
that can be expected to be provided! So make sure to skip eating any tea!
Usual time and place as it would be for a LUG meeting... (I'll send out
another reminder close to the time)
Their website: // <https://wiki.fsfe.org/LocalGroups/Potteries>/_Wiki
page (click the link)_
/
Their mailing list (it is *strong advised* to subscribe to their mailing
list... it will get different messages to the LUG)/: //Mailing list 📨/
<https://lists.fsfe.org/mailman/listinfo/potteries/>/(click the link)
<https://lists.fsfe.org/mailman/listinfo/potteries/>
/
🇬🇧 📍Innovation Centre 1 building (i.e. marked simply as 'IC'...
closest to the centre part of campus), KeeleUniversity, ST5 5NB,
Staffordshire, United Kingdom.
⏰ 18:30 (main activities starting at 19:00)
📋 It would be handy if you can subscribe to the Potteries mailing list
<https://lists.fsfe.org/mailman/listinfo/potteries/> and let us know you
are coming!
🚗 If coming by car... please use the rear (and lower) car park behind
the building (2nd left if coming from Newcastle) and only the space
marked 'Internet Central'
Hopefully it'll get listed on fsfe.org too soon, they're just waiting to
hear on that.

Hi Steven,
Out of courtesy, I thought I'd better advise you of my intention to come
along on Tuesday... obviously, feel free to extol the virtues of the
Exim MTA!
BTW, I understand that the world is divided about whether pineapple on
pizza is a "good thing" - but my preference is still (boring) ham &
pineapple... :)
